Currently, the core initial development zone of Weihai Nanhai New Area covers 160 square kilometers (including Zeku Town and Xiaoguan Town), with a planned construction area of 90 square kilometers. The core zone is located in the southern part of Wendeng District, bounded by Huanhai Road to the north, Huanglei River to the west, and Changhuikou Bridge to the east
Development of the Weihai Nanhai New Area began in March 2007. It is one of the key marine economic new areas under the national strategy of the Shandong Peninsula Blue Economy Zone. The core initial development zone has a planned control area of 160 square kilometers and a planned construction area of 90 square kilometers, with 156 kilometers of coastline.
In February 2011, in response to the development needs of the Nanhai New Area, the Wending Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government transferred Nangou Village in Houjia Town, Xihai Zhuang in Songcun Town, and Buzichang Village and Cuijiazhuang Village in Zetou Town to the administration of the Nanhai New Area.
