The Yangzhou Economic Development Zone was established in May 1992. In June 2005, with the approval of the State Council, the Yangzhou Export Processing Zone was established within the Development Zone. In July 2009, it was upgraded to a national-level economic and technological development zone. In January 2016, it was approved as a national-level comprehensive bonded zone.Currently, the zone covers an area of 133.29 square kilometers and comprises three townships—Shiqiao, Bali, and Puxi—as well as two subdistrict offices—Wenhui and Yangzijin. It has a permanent population of approximately 194,000.
In recent years, the Development Zone has achieved rapid growth in strategic emerging industries represented by solar photovoltaics, semiconductor lighting, smart grids, and e-books—collectively known as the “Three New Industries, One Network, and One Book” initiative—while accelerating the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries such as automotive equipment.Currently, the zone is home to more than ten “national-level” brands, including the National Semiconductor Lighting Industrialization Base, the National Green New Energy Industrial Base, the National Smart Grid Specialized Industrial Base, the National Digital Publishing Base, the National Torch Program Yangzhou Automobile and Parts Industrial Base, the National Science and Technology-Driven Trade Innovation Base, the National High-Tech Entrepreneurship Service Center, the National Key Laboratory for Optoelectronic Product Testing,the Yangzhou Branch of the China International Talent Market, a National Ecological Industrial Demonstration Park, a National Circular Economy Pilot Unit, and a National Circular Economy Education Demonstration Base. According to the latest report from the Ministry of Commerce on the comprehensive evaluation of scientific development in development zones, the Yangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone ranks seventh among national-level development zones in Jiangsu Province and 17th nationwide, following the Changzhou High-Tech Zone.
