The Rugao Economic and Technological Development Zone was established in September 1992 and became one of the first 13 provincial-level development zones in Jiangsu Province in December 1993.In January 2013, it was upgraded to a National Economic and Technological Development Zone and has been honored with titles such as National-Level Science and Technology Enterprise Incubator, Production Base for Ultra-High Voltage Power Transmission and Transformation Equipment, China’s Demonstration Base for Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration and Innovation, Most Investment-Worthy Development Zone in the Yangtze River Delta, Jiangsu Province New Energy Vehicle Industry Base, New Energy Vehicle Specialized Industrial Cluster, Eco-Industrial Park, and Garment Export Quality and Safety Demonstration Zone.
